Entryway Coat Rack with Shelf — Easy Build

Tame the Entryway in One Afternoon

Keys on the floor, jackets on the couch, mail everywhere — an entryway coat rack with a top shelf solves all three. This build hangs on the wall, holds coats on sturdy hooks, and gives you a shelf for baskets or bins above.

The finished piece is 36 inches wide, 24 inches tall overall, with a 6-inch-deep shelf.

Tools You'll Need

  • Miter saw or circular saw
  • Drill/driver with bits
  • Stud finder and level
  • Tape measure, pencil, speed square
  • Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)

Materials

  • 1 — 1x8 x 8 ft pine board
  • 1 — 1x6 x 4 ft pine board
  • 4–5 — sturdy coat hooks (double hooks work great)
  • 1 1/4 in and 2 1/2 in wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Wood filler
  • Paint or stain and finish

Step-by-Step Build

1. Cut the boards

Cut the back board and shelf to 36 inches. Cut two shelf brackets from scrap — simple triangular brackets cut on a miter saw work perfectly and look intentional.

2. Sand everything

Sand all pieces with 120 then 220 grit before assembly. Round the front edge of the shelf slightly for comfort.

3. Attach the shelf brackets

Glue and screw the brackets to the back board, about 3 inches from each end, positioned so the shelf will sit at the top. Pre-drill to avoid splitting.

4. Attach the shelf

Apply glue to the tops of the brackets and the top edge of the back board, set the shelf in place, and screw down through the shelf into each bracket. The back board edge supports the rear of the shelf too.

5. Install the hooks

Lay out your hooks evenly across the back board — four or five across 36 inches is typical. Drill pilot holes and screw each hook in with the provided screws. Double hooks hold coats plus bags.

6. Finish and hang

Fill screw holes, sand, and apply your finish. To hang, locate two studs, drive screws through the back board into the studs, and check with a level. This piece carries real weight — never hang it on drywall anchors alone.

Layout Tips

  • Hook height matters. Mount the board so hooks sit around 60 inches from the floor — reachable for most adults.
  • Space hooks generously. Six inches apart keeps bulky winter coats from crowding.
  • Leave the shelf deep enough for bins. Six inches fits small baskets and mail trays.
