How to Build a Simple Laptop Lap Desk
A Lap Desk That Beats the Couch Cushion
Working from the couch is fine until your laptop overheats your legs and slides everywhere. A simple lap desk — a flat wooden tray with a raised edge — fixes both problems. This build takes about two hours and uses one small board.
The finished desk is 20 inches wide and 13 inches deep — sized for laptops up to about 16 inches.
Tools You'll Need
- Miter saw or hand saw
- Drill/driver with small bits
- Tape measure, pencil, combination square
- Sandpaper (150 and 220 grit)
- Clamps
Materials
- 1 — 1x12 x 4 ft pine board (or 1/2 in plywood, 20 x 13 in)
- 1 — 1x2 x 4 ft board (for the lip and optional handles)
- 3/4 in wood screws or brads
- Wood glue
- Finish: mineral oil, Danish oil, or polyurethane
Cut List
| Part | Qty | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Desk top | 1 | 20 x 13 in (from 1x12 or plywood) |
| Front lip | 1 | 1x2 x 20 in |
| Side handles (optional) | 2 | 1x2 x 6 in |
Step-by-Step Build
1. Cut the desk top
Cut your top panel to 20 x 13 inches. If using a 1x12 board, cut it to 20 inches long — the actual board width (11 1/4 inches) gives you a slightly narrower desk, which is fine, or glue two boards for a wider top.
2. Cut the lip
Cut a 20-inch piece of 1x2 for the front lip. This is the small rail that keeps the laptop from sliding toward you.
3. Sand everything smooth
Sand all pieces through 150 then 220 grit. This desk touches your legs and wrists for hours — silky edges matter. Round over every edge and corner generously.
4. Attach the lip
Glue and clamp the lip along one long edge of the top. Add small screws or brads from underneath for extra hold. The lip should sit flush with the edge.
5. Add handles (optional)
Cut two 6-inch 1x2 pieces and attach them to the underside near the sides as carrying handles — they also lift the desk slightly for airflow under the laptop.
6. Finish
Apply two or three coats of your finish. A hard-wearing finish like polyurethane or Danish oil handles coffee cups and daily use. Let it cure completely before using.
Design Tweaks
- Ventilation slots: Drill a few 1-inch holes in the top under where the laptop sits for airflow.
- Mouse pad area: Widen the desk to 24 inches if you use an external mouse.
- Cushion bottom: Glue a piece of felt or fabric to the underside for comfort on your lap.
